Akindele Owolabi Essays (991 words) - Academic Writing, Free Essays Akindele Owolabi Jovonne Bickerstaff English 104-25 October 27, 2015 Critical writing The guidelines for what was considered critical writing in the past was very strict. An important reason for this strictness is that writing could not be shared through different mediums. Unlike the limited amount of mediums in the past, today there are a plethora such as social networking sites, blogs, and online articles. Critical writing in the past took much effort because writers then lacked resources such as online databases. One would have to read multiple books to find things that can be used in his or her writing. Because of the effort it took to write such scholarly essays, there were strict guidelines as to what people would have considered critical writing. In the present, however, critical writing has become easier. There are many sources of information, easier citation methods, and less complicated ways to get writing to the public and all of those things can be done on a single device. Because writers don't have to get through a publisher to have their work seen b y others today, important steps that I feel one's work needs to complete in order to be considered critical writing are omitted. Some of those steps include proper citations, lists of works cited, and statements that are defendable with facts. For me, critical writing can be posted anywhere as long as it uses facts from a credible source of information and gives credit to that source in the proper way. The reason being is if those repercussions aren't taken, false information can be given to the public and the public wouldn't We already have that problem, people not knowing what to believe on the internet, and that is because of poor citing of sources. For me its really all about ensuring the fact that correct information is given. The only way to ensure that in my opinion is to basically prove everything that is being said using already credible facts. A perfect example that shows the results of uncredited pieces was the posting of the infamous picture from the million-man march in 1995. Because no one was giving credit to the Photographer and properly citing it, people mistook that picture for one that was taken in the 2015 anniversary. Another incident where incorrect information was given was during the summer of 2015 when Sandra bland was allegedly killed in police custody. The way she died is still is unknown however one day someone decided to post a video of a dead woman getting dragged out of a police car with no proof that it was Sandra bland but still claiming that it was her. This is why citing is important, it prevents false information from being spread. Although I have strict guidelines as to what I consider critical writing, that is not to say I think writing that I don't consider critical should be ignored. The article Can We Stop Pretending That Ben Carson Is Running for President? By Jason Johnson is a perfect example of writing that shouldn't be ignored but isn't considered critical writing to me. To me this article is not considered critical writing because it doesn't have some of the factors that I stated previously. It does not properly cite all sources and does not have a part of the article dedicated to works cited. Johnson states multiple things without having solid facts to defend them or giving credit to his sources. For example, Johnson states "Gingrich, who raised $23 million in his campaign, only to win one primary state. In the meantime, he managed to go to the all-important Hawaiian primary just in time for his wedding anniversary". Although what he states about Gingrich's whereabouts and actions may be facts, I don't see where he got the information on. Johnson goes on to state more stats on different presidents' campaign totals and what they used the money for but we still don't know where he got the information from. That is why I don't see this article and others that are similar to is as critical writing. For quick information although it may not be completely true, I would read the article. The law is not enacted when one is not moral or does not act in a certain moral way. The reparations of not being moral are often individual. Morality and laws often contradict in their formation and implementation. Moralities develop after a while, are not easy to alter, and are often a mindset that people have. Laws on the other hand, are easily amended and do not require a lot of time. The well-known debate between hart and Devlin addressed the relationship between law and principles. The debate sought to address several issues in criminal law. The issues at hand are mainly how homosexuality was a part of criminal law (Curzon pg 36). Laws and morality have been debated on for many years. The line between the two is often thin, and some morals turn out to be ethical issues. Laws are often enforced by the administration of a country. Morals on the other hand, are often supported by the admi nistration but by the society at large. In 1957, the Wolfenden commission met to discuss a few issues. The committee aimed at decriminalization homosexual activities of men who acted in private. The debate questioned the relations that existed between morality and the law. The commission members questioned the extent to which criminal law was limited immensely. They did not understand how morality and criminal law intertwined. The commission had an extremely weighty argument that formed the basis of the debate to date (Lee pg 160). Devlin’s view The commission felt that if the actions of an individual did not harm the society then the offence was not significant. They felt the law would be justified to allow liberty of preferences even though the actions were considered immoral by the society. According to the committee, the role of the legal system consisted of defending the members of the society. The court was to protect the rights of the public from unpleasant and harmful acts. The court has no right to enforce any form of moral decision on an individual (Lee pg 161).What an individual does is purely personal, and no one has the right to interfere. There are various categories of harm in the society. It is not a criminal offence to hurt a person’s feeling. Devlin did not agree with this report and published an article to disclaim this. He argued that the law was not only meant for persons but for the public at large. The society has a lot of people, and it needs protection. The needs of an individual are less than society’s. The society morals cannot be compromised because of the rights of one individual in society. He argued that morality should come on its own. Devlin asserted that principles ought to stem from a sober mind what should be done to improve the society at large (Curzon pg 43). The society has the biggest role to play in the governing of the country. One individual’s actions affect the society at large. The action s of such individuals should therefore, be taken into account and in protecting the rights of one individual, lawmakers risk tarnishing the reputation of the society. In Devlin’s view, lawmakers have to consider a person’s liberty. They also have to take into account the fact that the society is constantly changing. The way the public views social customs and the liberty of an individual to act in private is also changing. Not everyone accepted the thought that Devlin had and one person in particular sought to challenge the thought. The man who challenged this thought went by the name Hart. According to the Oxford English Dictionary one of the definitions of the word "education" is: "The systematic instruction, schooling or training given to the young in preparation for the work of life; by extension, similar instruction or training obtained in adult age. Also, the whole course of scholastic instruction which a person has received. Often with limiting words denoting the nature of the predominant subject of the instruction or kind of life it prepares, as classical, legal, medical, technical, commercial, art education." Although this is an accurate description of what an actual education may be, there is a great deal more to the process of becoming educated than the actual instruction and schooling one may receive. If you asked a person in high school or college exactly why he is in school his response would probably have something to do with "getting an education." Is that really why he is there? The next question you may ask is "what are you going to do with your education?" The response would undoubtedly include something about "getting a good job" or perhaps "to make a lot of money." Most of the people in the United States have been brainwashed to think that unless one has at least a high school diploma there is no future anywhere for him. This is completely untrue. There is no guarantee that getting a high school "education" is going to get you anywhere. A student may spend eight years between high school and college getting an "education." He can graduate from college with A's in every class, but still, this "education" means nothing. For example, suppose this "Straight A" student goes for a job interview. Obviously one of the first things to be looked at is the college diploma. Good grades, which by today's standards are an indication of an educated individual, are usually very helpful in getting a good job. But alone, good grades are a completely unfair indication of how a person will perform under the pressures of the real world. Instead of looking at a person's grades during a job interview and deciding whether that person is eligible for a particular position, why not try something realistic? To determine a particular person's "education" why not allow the individual to apply what he knows to his position in the workplace. This is the true test of what an education is. The application of knowledge acquired is a much better determinant of true education than whether or not a person got an A in Wood Shop or World History. Were you going to go to college, or take a year off and work? We all know how teenagers think, their ready to move out and be on their own, do things that they want to do. Young adults around the ages 18 and 21 should move to Austin, live life on their own, and experience a place they have never seen before.Austin isn’t like any other place; these austinite’s do things their own unique way. Living on your own, and moving to a place you’ve never been before, is probably the hardest thing. You have to worry about getting a job, a place to live, school if that’s what you’re choosing to go there for, and meeting new people. Well I can tell you that Austin has all of that. Yes the saying â₠¬Å"Keep Austin Weird† might have you wondering, but trust me austinites know how to have a good time. The best fit for this age group on finding a place to live would be an apartment. Austin apartments are unique, and have different styles for different people.For the young I believe downtown apartments are more home fitting, walking distance to places, and you get to know Austin more. But if you’re not into the city living, Austin does have some great apartments outside the city. You will still be close to the city, but also see more of Austin besides downtown. All of Austin’s apartments are very reasonable; I believe they are way cheaper then any other state. Compared to a $3,000 apartment in California, apartments in Austin will the battle. With finding places to live you have to have money to pay for it. The next best thing is finding the perfect job.Some people may say Austin is the worst place to find a job, but it really isn’t. At this age youâ€⠄¢re not yet titled to have that office job, or be a business person just yet.
